Goal

What do we want? Parking-protected bike lanes!
When do we want them? NOW!

Since 2017, the Bicycle Coalition and Bike Pittsburgh have been advocating for a change in the vehicle code to allow for parking protected bike lanes. (Read more about the history)

Parking-protected bike lanes are a cost effective way to create more protected bike lanes and reduce all roadway crashes, while having minimal impact to parking or traffic. The legislation would give municipalities and PennDOT the option to build these lanes when wanted. It does not mandate their use. In 2017, PennDOT created a pilot program in Philadelphia to test the efficacy of parking-protected bike lanes and a report found that ridership was up, crashes were down, and there was minimal impact to traffic flow. But a pilot program is not enough; we need permanent measures to save cyclists' lives.

Join us in calling for the legalization of parking-protected bike lanes across the Commonwealth today!

Giving municipalities and PennDOT the option to build parking protected bike lanes is common sense. This type of infrastructure is proven to reduce crashes, increase safe bike ridership, and have minimal impact on traffic speeds or parking. It is a critical tool that countless municipaties across the country utilize and it's time Pennsylvania does too.

Bike lanes are unsafe without protection. I have been hit by a car swerving into the bike lane for no reason. This is a perfect solution to make bike lanes safe while preserving parking, it's a no brainer.
