Ask Burlington County Commissioners to Prioritize Trails for Funding to Reach 500 Miles by 2025

In the Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey area, trails and active transportation networks are essential infrastructure for equitably addressing the most pressing issues facing our region--from economic development, to climate resiliency, mobility, and bicyclist and pedestrian safety.

That’s the motivation for the Circuit Trails Coalition’s vision to connect the region’s trail network across nine counties and 800 miles. While more than 378 miles are completed, the Coalition has a goal to connect 500 miles by 2025. The good news is that the trail projects are there to reach that goal. What we need is for this infrastructure to be prioritized for investment and construction across our region.

The Circuit Trails Coalition is rallying support across the region to all county commissioners to prioritize the connectivity of trail and active transportation networks, incentivizing the acceleration and maintenance of this infrastructure to make it safer, more accessible, and more convenient to walk and bike; to encourage people to swap car trips for walking and biking trips, reducing greenhouse gas emissions generated from transportation; and to ultimately create more equitable economic and quality-of-life opportunities for everyone who lives here.

I am writing to you as a resident of Burlington County and your constituent.

In the Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey areas, trails and active transportation networks are essential infrastructure for equitably addressing the most pressing issues facing New Jersey’s economic development, climate resiliency, mobility and bicyclist and pedestrian safety.

I am calling upon the County Commissioners who sit on the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) Board to work in conjunction with their State Department of Transportation to allocate $10 million in discretionary federal funds annually toward selected Circuit Trails in order to accelerate the development of the regional network to reach 500 miles by 2025.

By investing in our trails, there’s an opportunity for you to put the people first and take a step toward enhancing our active transportation system for future generations.

Across the region, there’s strong momentum on the side of trails, walking and biking. This once-in-a-generation funding opportunity must be harnessed and allocated toward the advancement of the Circuit Trails network. By building on the momentum of the people’s modal-shift to biking and walking, you can build upon a growing network where more people are using active transportation to reach their destination.

This trail network is a powerful tool for our region: it is essential infrastructure that provides equitable access to outdoor recreation and the community, helps reduce carbon emissions by making space for people to safely travel by foot or bike, is a notable component to our active transportation system, and contributes to the economic health of the Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey areas. I am a user of the Circuit Trails and support all efforts by municipalities, the county, the state, nonprofit partners and your office to close key gaps and complete trail segments within our county.

As you plan and prepare to allocate available funding, please prioritize the Circuit Trails. By doing so, you would help deliver regional benefits, such as economic development, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and improved equitable mobility options. By advancing the Circuit Trails network, you are enhancing our health, safety, mobility, and equitable and economic accessibility in the county and throughout our region.
