URGENT ACTION! Step Up for Parking Protected Bike Lanes

What do we want? Parking-protected bike lanes!
When do want them? NOW!

On Wednesday October 9th, two major things happened to move forward the parking protected bike lane legislation.
1. The Senate Transportation Committee unanimously passed HB 1283 without adding any amendments. This has been the sticking point each session. The bill has now been sent to the full Senate for a vote.
2. The full House passed SB 1147 (201-1) and sent the bill to the Senate for concurrence. SB 1147 is a motorcycle safety bill introduced by Sen. Bartolotta (R) that was amended to include the language of HB 1283.

So what happens now? The House and Senate are scheduled to come back on Monday October 21st, so that would be the earliest either HB 1283 or SB 1147 can be voted on. Until then, we are asking individuals to reach out to members of leadership from both chambers.

Background:

Currently, PennDOT does not allow for the installation of parking-separated bike lanes on state-owned roads. Amending state legislation is an issue that the Bicycle Coalition, the City of Philadelphia, and our partners have been working on since the 2017-2018 legislative session. As an interim solution, PennDOT has permitted a pilot program to demonstrate protected bike lanes on selected state roads in Philadelphia.

Since 2017, we have worked with Bike Pittsburgh to advocate for bills named after Emily Fredricks (Philadelphia) and Susan Hicks (Pittsburgh) who were killed by drivers every legislative session to legalize parking protected bike lanes.

Join us in calling on our state legislators to save lives by passing HB1283 or SB 1147. One life lost is one too many.

Please enter your address below to move on to the letter. Feel free to edit the opening of the letter to include a personal reason why you care about this legislation.

Thank you!
