Goal

Everyone who calls Philadelphia “home” deserves a city that is connected, safe, and built for all to enjoy, regardless of income, race, age, or ability. Our physical environment has the opportunity to bring us together, but too often it divides us.

The 2023 Better Mobility platform outlines a set of goals and recommendations for the next mayor to build a future for Philadelphia with no traffic fatalities, accessible public transportation, safe and maintained public spaces for everyone to enjoy.

The 2023 Better Mobility Platform was crafted by the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia with the help of 9 organizations:

  • AARP Pennsylvania
  • Transit Forward Philadelphia
  • Clean Air Council
  • Feet First Philly
  • Parks and Rec Heroes Fund
  • Street Box PHL
  • East Coast Greenway Alliance
  • 5th Square
  • Fairmount Parks Conservancy

I support the 2023 Better Mobility Platform and want the next mayor of Philadelphia to raise the profile of transportation issues.

The next Mayor needs to adopt these goals to guide its administration’s policies and legislative initiatives:

  • Reduce annual traffic deaths by half by 2026
  • Motivate 2 out of every 3 Philadelphians to bike, walk, or take transit to get around
  • Reimagine and redesign streets to prioritize human life, public health, and community
  • Provide every resident with access to safe streets and sidewalks to get to school or work, to play, and to enjoy Philadelphia and its great neighborhoods

Priority should be given to pedestrians, cyclist, and those riding public transit over cars. It currently is the reverse making is dangerous to walk around. Permanent physical barriers need to be easy to get in order to physically protect walkers and cyclist from cars not paying attention. "whoops I didn't see you so I permanently injured you or killed you," is NOT ok. We need a strong effort to transform streets in the city to make it feel safe to walk around. Have a huge effort to give walkers pedestrians and public transit users priority over cars.

  • Brandon Smith Philadelphia, PA

I'd love to see more traffic calming measures and protected bike lanes get implemented in greater Center City to make biking a more pleasant experience and encourage more people to start biking!

  • Peter Durlacher Philadelphia, PA

Reviewing this platform document gives me hope - from what I can tell, the barriers to this are almost exclusively the will and willingness of leadership in the city to engage. This program is possible. This program is necessary.

    Safer streets for everyone.
